Crockett, born outside Castle Douglas, wrote many thrilling adventure stories about smugglers set in the Galloway Hills. J.M. Barrie, who famously wrote Peter Pan, went to school in Dumfries and conceived his vision of Neverland while playing in the garden of Moat Brae House, which has now become Scotland’s National Centre for Children’s Literacy and Storytelling and is open for visits. A car is the easiest way to reach the cottages but there is a train station in Dumfries, 12 miles away, and Glasgow Airport is less than a 2 hour drive. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh City Centres can be reach in about 2 hours with much to see and do if you were looking for a day trip. Dumfries is the largest local town in the area with plenty of shops, restaurants, the Burns Museum, Moat Brae and a theatre. Castle Douglas is a charming, traditional market town with independent shops specialising in food and local produce. There is also a thriving theatre here, a restaurant serving up local, seasonal and foraged meals. All the cottages are within easy reach of the coast and the many beautiful beaches along the Solway. Threave Castle and the National Trust Threave Gardens are 8 miles away and make for an interesting cultural day excursion.
